Our Services
Audit and Tax Services Built for Associations and Membership Organizations
Associations aren’t like other nonprofits, and your auditor shouldn’t treat you like one. Dues, lobbying notices, sponsorship income, and a related foundation all add layers that a general practice firm may not see often. At Mullins P.C., we see them every day. Our senior team brings years of association experience to every audit and tax return, with predictable, fixed fees and a fully remote process that respects your staff’s time.
Audits That Reflect How Associations Run
Association finances have moving parts that a typical nonprofit audit doesn’t cover. Dues paid in advance, conference revenue that spans fiscal years, sponsorships, and a related charitable foundation all affect how your financial statements come together. Our team knows where these issues show up and plans for them from day one, so there are no surprises late in the audit. Areas where our association experience makes a difference:
- Dues and conference revenue recognition
- Combined statements with a related foundation
- Internal controls and board reporting
- Reviews and compilations for smaller associations
Association Tax Filings, Handled Right
As a 501(c)(6), your association faces tax rules that charities don’t. We prepare your Form 990 and Form 990-T, and help you identify income that may be taxable, like advertising, sponsorships, and affinity programs. We also help you calculate the portion of member dues tied to lobbying and get the required notice to members right. Our tax preparation and compliance services for associations include:
- Form 990 and Form 990-T
- Unrelated business income review
- Lobbying and dues deductibility notices
- State filings and registrations
Practical Guidance for Association Leaders
Associations are always adjusting, whether that means rethinking dues, adding new programs, or growing revenue beyond membership. We help leadership teams and boards work through those decisions with clear numbers and plain answers. We can support in a variety of ways:
- Dues structure and revenue planning
- Revenue beyond dues, like events and sponsorships
- Budgeting and board financial reporting
- Accounting system and process improvements

It depends on your funding and your state. Many nonprofits need an audit because of a state charitable registration threshold, a federal funding requirement, a grantor or lender condition, or their own bylaws. If you are not sure which applies to you, the National Council of Nonprofits has the most current information.
The three services differ in how much assurance they provide. An audit is the highest level and includes testing and verification of your financial statements. A review is a limited-assurance service based mainly on analysis and inquiry. A compilation simply presents your financials in proper format with no assurance. Many small nonprofits need only a review or compilation, which costs less than a full audit.
Mullins P.C. quotes a fixed fee upfront, so you know your full cost before the engagement begins with no hourly billing or surprises. The fee depends on your organization’s size, complexity, and funding sources.
A single audit, also called a Uniform Guidance audit or historically an OMB Circular A-133 audit, combines a financial statement audit with additional testing of your nonprofit’s compliance with federal award requirements and related internal controls. It follows standard auditing requirements, Government Auditing Standards, and the federal Uniform Guidance.
A single audit is generally required when your nonprofit expends $1 million or more in federal awards during its fiscal year. This includes federal funding received directly from the federal government or indirectly through a state, local government, or another organization. The threshold is based on federal awards expended, not simply the amount awarded or received. We can help determine whether your nonprofit needs a single audit and guide you through the process.
Most engagements run several weeks from kickoff to final report, depending on how ready your records are and how quickly requests are returned. Because a Mullins P.C audit is fully remote, our goal is to keep the burden on your team low while maintaining a high quality bar.
Yes. Mullins P.C. serves nonprofits nationwide. Your location does not limit your access to a nonprofit audit specialist, and the entire engagement is handled remotely.
We start with a clear, upfront list of the documents and financial records we will need, so nothing is a surprise. From there we plan the engagement around your team’s capacity and communicate each step and deadline as we go.
